Standing Under the Scriptures
February 7, 2010
Dear Fellow Voyagers,
Our readings for this Sunday are:
1 Corinthians 15.1-11: Paul speaks very directly of the witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection, for him the core of the Christian gospel, and of his own place among them.
Luke 5.1-11: Jesus calls Peter and James and John to be, as his disciples, “fishers of men,” in distinction from but also in continuity with their previous vocation.
Last Sunday we had no class, since I was the preacher at the services. So instead of the usual account of the class discussion I am attaching my sermon, embodying to some extent our discussion of the Sunday before. Possibly those of you who could not be there to hear it missed something. For particularly at the 11 o’clock service the wind seemed to catch the sail, as it were, and I was buoyed by the response I could feel from the congregation. I am grateful to those who spoke to me about it afterwards (e.g. “I knew there were young firebrands but I didn’t know there were old firebrands”). I hope that in its written form it will be meaningful. Please, on reading it, let me know what you consider it to be saying, implicitly as well as explicitly.
And I hope that, despite any snow, there will be some to keep me company this Sunday.
Faithfully, Fr. Ted
