Bylaws Amendment
The following outlines a new Vestry oath which Dr. Zahl, Bishop Edward Salmon and the Vestry unanimously support. We will be voting on this amendment at the Annual Meeting.
This proposed new Vestry oath is the first in a series of changes to the parish and All Saints Foundation bylaws being studied by the Vestry under the direction of Bishop Salmon and with my direction and support. Bishop Salmon discussed this review of our governing documents with Bishop John Chane at the recent House of Bishops meeting.
Proposed Amendment to Article III, Section 7, of Bylaws to Adopt New Vestry Oath and Explanation for Proposed Amendment
At its March 3, 2008, meeting, the All Saints’ vestry unanimously adopted the following resolution proposing to amend the existing vestry oath set forth in Article III, Section 7, by substituting the following new vestry oath:
I,________________, do solemnly swear that I confess Jesus Christ as Lord and that I will faithfully execute the office of vestry member in Chevy Chase Parish, in Montgomery County, without prejudice, favor or affection, according to the best of my skill and knowledge.
The vestry proposes the adoption of a new vestry oath in agreement with and upon the recommendation of our oversight Bishop, The Right Reverend Edward L. Salmon, Jr.
Bishop Salmon believes that the existing oath is cumbersome and fails to communicate in simple, readily understandable terms the nature and seriousness of vestry service.
The existing vestry oath provides as follows:
I, _______________, believe in the Christian Faith as set out in the “Outline of Faith” found in the Book of Common Prayer of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America.
I, ________________, do solemnly swear, that I will faithfully execute the office of Member of the Vestry of Chevy Chase Parish, in Montgomery County, without prejudice, favor or affection, according to the best of my skill and knowledge.
I, _________________, asking God’s guidance, do promise to use my best skill and knowledge to nurture a Christ centered Parish family in which people worship, know, love and talk about God, and carry God’s love into the world.
